I can't remember exactly how I was introduced to Joel Douek, but I found myself invited to join him at his house "on the hill" one day. No, Joel did not live on the hill, he lived on TOP of the Hollywood Hills with stunning views and an amazing studio. I mean, I have two pianos (at my parents) and a keyboard. Pales in comparison.
Joel has scored IMAX movies and animation. I don't know why he agreed to join us, but he did.

I thought Joel would be a hotshot, but he was the most amazing teacher.
When the session first started, he asked everyone just to chat so he could get to know them. He participated with enthusiasm on the organ during improv. (Incidentally, Jayleen chose to play drums.)

But what was more crazy was Joel's advice. It was not that of a star in his prime making gobs of money.
Instead:
"Music should emotionally transport you from place to place."
"Can you be a composer if you're not sensitive?"
"Let your passion and love for being a composer be your guide. Be brave. Take risks."
Words I live by today.
Incidentally, this was also the day we met Christopher.
